Candy Counting Cards

Wow, its been a LONG time since I've blogged. (I'm so embarrassed.) In my defense I just finished up 8 weeks in 5th grade.  It was an amazing experience and I liked the challenges it brought.  I wasn't sure that I'd like working with older students but they were incredible.  It was hard to say good-bye but I'm ready for my next adventure.   Next stop-  Kindergarten (Yay)!!

The weather here in Iowa has been fantastic.  Today is a perfect fall day.  When I think of fall the first thing that comes to mind is food.  Fall means caramel apples, apple crisp, pumpkin bars and of course candy.  My oldest loves plain chocolate.  However, my youngest daughter loves candy corn.  So, with Maddie in mind here are some candy corn number cards.   For more candy corn goodies head over to the Inspired Apple and check out Abby's Candy Corn Bandit--- so cute!!

Fran over at Kindergarten  Crayons has been sharing some great new books.  Well, here is one of my new favorites.  This book is about a little girl named Birdy.  Birdy loves to smile and shares the importance of smiling.  I love when she compares everyone's smiles.  I think this is a great book for the first week of school.  You could even create a class book of SMILES.

Wow- what a busy month.  My husband and I celebrated our 18th anniversary, our youngest graduated Kindergarten and we survived our oldest daughter Katie's first year of Middle School (6th grade).  The last was the one we were most worried about, but surprisingly Middle School wasn't as bad as we imagined.  I know I shouldn't have said that out loud or challenged the universe.

This year I've had the opportunity to work in two wonderful classrooms.  One was a 2nd grade classroom with several ELL students.  This was my first opportunity working with ELL students and I learned so much.  While I was working with them I continued taking a college Spanish course.  Let's just say- learning a foreign language at any age is hard but in your late 30's its feels impossible.  I also had the chance to work with Kindergartners this year and all I can say is -Wow!!  Kindergartners keep you on your toes and I loved it.  It was fun going from working on double digit subtraction to practicing counting by 5's every week.  I noticed that in both classrooms I tied a lot of shoes.

I'm sad to see this year end but I'm looking forward to next year.  I'll be working with 4th graders and Kindergartners again!  Thanks so much for following my blog, all the advice and the opportunity to share ideas.  I plan on still posting some items over the summer but with 2 busy girls this could be a challenge.

Thanks again and have a FANTASTIC summer.

What a great idea!

I just stumbled across this blog Booky 4 First.  She made a little shelf to go between her student desks.  The shelf holds all their supplies without taking up desk space.  I love this idea!!

Easter Bunny on a Wednesday Night?

I know it has been a long time since I posted again. March was an extremely long and busy month and April isn't looking much better.  However, I just had to share what happened last night.  While I was at class I got a call from my daughter Katie.   Maddie had lost her first tooth.  I don't know who was more excited Katie or Maddie.   Maddie has been patiently waiting for this day for months. Every day she would check for wiggly teeth.   We had been reading tons of book about teeth and fairies in preparation for this big event.  Two months ago, the dentist finally told her that she had two teeth that would probably be out by Easter.  Dr. Matt was right on the money.  I'm trying hard not to focus on the fact that I missed this big moment or that my husband didn't take any photos.  I tried to wake her up last night to see the space but she when she is out she's out.  So here is a picture of her today with her card and treat from the Easter Bunny.

What!?  Did she say Easter Bunny?

Yes, just like in the book Silverlicious, the Tooth Fairy was unavailable last night so the Easter Bunny stopped by instead.  He left a note and Dove chocolate truffle egg (my favorite).  Hopefully, the Tooth Fairy will stop by tonight or maybe Santa will.  I still can't believe my baby lost her first tooth.
She lost the bottom tooth (she has a gap between her top teeth).

I will try and post something teacher related this weekend.   Take care and thanks for listening to me brag.

Wow- What a Day

Well, it has been one of those days. See, today was supposed to be a chill day, with just a little bit of homework, Daytona and a GS meeting.    However, at 9:30am my six year old starts choking in the bathroom.  She had been goofing  around and swallowed a little Pet Shop accessory.  It got stuck in her throat.  I'm normally pretty good under pressure but not where my girls are concerned.  Ten minutes-2 sheriffs' cars and 8 rescue volunteers later- she stopped gagging and said it was gone. Very Scary

She is now asleep and my heart rate has finally gone back to normal.  So time to get busy on homework- YUCK!  Then- Surprise, Surprise- I noticed I received a blog award from one of my favorite blogd "Fabulous in First".  Then to make things even better I hit 100 followers!!  Okay, that's 1 scary things and 3- Fabulous things (Maddie is fine-That is a big one).  So here is to a calm Sunday!!!

Reading Motivation for older students

crabby patties

A friend of mine teaches 3rd grade and has a Sponge Bob theme in her room (I'm not a SB fan, but it works for her).  She asked me to create some new materials for her room.  One of the things I created were these little hamburger/crabby patties.  I also made a large sign that says, "Over _______ Book Read."   The students fill out a crabby patty each time they complete a book or read over 100 pages.  Throughout the week the crabby patties will be collected.  At the end of week 1 lucky patty is drawn at random and they receive a prize.  Then all the crabby patties are counted and the sign updated.  If they hit their class goal (not sure what it is) they receive an extra recess or game play time.

Science in a Box

Science in a Box- These are simple, science experiments that students can complete independently, with all the materials contained in a box.  I try to keep the instructions very simple and include pictures of each step.

This experiment is about "Spreading Colors" or simple tie-dye.    My five year was able to complete the project with very little help (she did need help securing the rubber-band).  All you need to do, is print off the instruction cards, cut them apart, laminate, and attach them together with a binder ring.  Next, gather all the materials and place them in a box with the instruction booklet.   You can place the box in your science center or send it home each week, for children to do with their families.

This activity is fun for many different age groups.  My 6th grader and some of her friends did this experiment and they loved it.  They used the finished squares to make decorative cards.  A friend of mine, used this experiment with her Preschool class, to actually tie-dye t-shirts.   I've included a two-sided data sheet, however, this is optional.

Just have fun with it!

New Football -Activities

Here is an sneak peek at 2 of the activities that are included with my new Football - Literacy and Math Activities, available on Teachers Pay Teachers.

Wacky Wednesday

It all began with that shoe on the wall.

I think tomorrow is going to be a Wacky Wednesday.   Dr Seuss' Wacky Wednesday, is one of my favorite books to read.  The illustrations are so colorful and full of mischief and wackiness.  I like to surprise my kids in the morning with a shoe on the wall.  Throughout, the day I change things and wait for them to notice it.  You can make lots of changes or just a few, either way it's lots of fun.

Have fun-- and have a Wacky Wednesday, tomorrow.

Teachers Pay Teachers

Well, I finally uploaded my first product.  It's a partner game called Touchdown.  The game comes with blank cards that can be used to practice math facts, sight words and/or spelling words.  You can even write  review questions for older students.  Once they are laminated just use a sharpie marker to write in your sight words or other information.  Once you are ready for a new skill just erase the sharpie marks with rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover or with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.  To view my products just click on the Teachers pay Teachers image above.
